This section is to explain the different strategies someone can choose when buying techs.
-
- Offensive
- This strategy involves buying offensive technologies as soon as possible to increase a player's attacking power. This allows a player to attack other offensive players for their gold or attack defenders for gold and kills. This strategy has lost a lot of its popularity the last few ages and many "offensive" players are playing with the Offensive/Production strategy. To play as an offensive player requires spending a fair amount of time logged in to attack for the gold required to advance.
-
- Defensive
- This strategy involves buying defensive technologies as soon as possible to increase a player's defensive power. This allows a player to withstand attacks from other players and protect the gold they produce. Defensive players require attackers with more points losing units to the defense to gain MXP unless the defender buys it. Defenders usually do not fully train their defense because this would significantly decrease the amount of gold they produce, completely removing any chance to buy more technologies quickly. This strategy has been slowly increasing in popularity the last few ages. To play as a defensive player requires much less time online than the offensive strategy because the player does not have to attack, just wait for their gold to accumulate.
-
- Production
- This strategy involves buying production and birth technologies as soon as possible to maximize the amount of gold and food produced. Production players usually have no way to gain MXP because they do not train offensive or defensive units as this would decrease their production. This strategy has become much more popular the past few ages, but mainly as Offensive/Production mentioned below. The biggest downfall of this strategy is that a player must be online as much as possible to buy trades with their production at the start of every turn before it is stolen.
-
- Offensive/Defensive
- This strategy involves buying both offensive and defensive technologies in an attempt to be able to attack for gold and defend the gold they produce. This is the absolute worst strategy in my opinion. The reason for this is that someone with the same number of techs will either be further along the offensive or defensive side of the tech tree and will be much more powerful. A person using this strategy will not be able to break pure defenders or withstand attacks of pure attackers. I only included this strategy for completion purposes.

- Offensive/Production
- This strategy involves buying both offensive and production technologies. The main thought behind this strategy is to mainly be a production player, but have enough offensive power to be able to safely attack offensive and production players. This is a very powerful strategy that has gotten much more popular the past few ages. Many offensive players are changing to this strategy if they have the time to log in every turn to bank their production. This strategy has the benefits of both the offensive and production strategies. Players using this strategy can gain MXP by training the offensive units they have and attacking defenders.
-
- Production/Defensive
- This strategy involves playing with the Production strategy while buying defensive techs and not training up a defense. Then with a few weeks left in the age when a player has all of the defensive techs, they train up a defense and play as a defensive player the rest of the age.
